Melonjs - Browser Based 2D Game Engine

melonJS is an open-source, lightweight HTML5 game engine designed for building 2D and 2.5D games using JavaScript and TypeScript. The framework offers a Canvas2D-inspired API that simplifies rendering while providing a powerful WebGL backend with automatic fallback capabilities. https://www.i-programmer.info/news/167-javascript/18949-melonjs-browser-based-2d-game-engine.html

Join The Web Component JavaScript Frameworks Party

A place where you can compare common task syntax between top web component JavaScript frameworks. Why is that useful? We all know how fragmented the JavaScript frameworks landscape is. In a sense you could draw the line between two eras, pre-React and after React. https://www.i-programmer.info/news/87-web-development/17784-join-the-web-component-javascript-frameworks-party.html

Extend NGINX With The New JavaScript Module

Inject middleware functionality into NGINX with the  expressive power of Javascript. NGINX JavaScript or NJS for short is a dynamic module under which you can use scripting for hooking into the NGINX execution model. https://www.i-programmer.info/news/87-web-development/17580-extend-nginx-with-the-new-javascript-module.html#google_vignette

JSNation 2024 Sessions Now Available Online

The sessions of this year's premium Javascript conference, JSNation, are now available online and for free. Since there's a lot of material to go through we did a bit of digging to suggest the best to watch first. https://www.i-programmer.info/news/167-javascript/17361-jsnation-2024-sessions-now-available-online.html

Get Started With Ollama's Python & Javascript Libraries

New libraries allow you to integrate new and existing apps with Ollama in just a few lines of code. Here we show you how to use ollama-python and ollama-javascript so that you can integrate Ollama's functionality from within your Python or Javascript programs. https://www.i-programmer.info/news/105-artificial-intelligence/17232-get-started-with-ollamas-python-a-javascript-libraries.html

AWS Introduces A New JavaScript Runtime For Lambda

Amazon has announced the availability, albeit for experimental purposes, of a new JavaScript based runtime called Low Latency Runtime or LLRT for short, to bring JavaScript up to the performance throughput of low-level languages like Rust or C++. https://www.i-programmer.info/news/81-web-general/17052-aws-introduces-a-new-javascript-runtime-for-lambda.html

TinyBase And The Local First Movement

TinyBase is a Javascript library that enables you to create an in-browser, local-first, reactive data store. Too much terminology in one sentence - let's dissect it. With Tinybase you can store structured tabular data locally on your device. If you want a hyped headline it would  "in-memory reactive tabular data store" . What's the deal with that kind of Store? https://www.i-programmer.info/news/84-database/16907-tinybase-and-the-local-first-movement.html

Introducing The MDN Front-End Developer Curriculum

MDM launches another initiative to get developers up-to-date with the skills the industry looks for when looking to hire front-end web developers. The Core skills of Coding aside, the skill set presented includes soft skills, knowledge of a typical development environment and learning how you can expand your knowledge and develop specialities. https://www.i-programmer.info/news/87-web-development/16720-introducing-the-mdn-front-end-developer-curriculum.html

Test Your Knowledge With The JS Is Weird Quiz

How well do you know JavaScript? Put your knowledge to test with the interactive quiz tailored to devs who think they know it all.  It is true that all web applications are directly written or are transpiled to JavaScript. It does really drives the web because it's easy to get started with and with it you can make functional web sites quickly and without much ado. https://www.i-programmer.info/news/167-javascript/16587-test-your-knowledge-with-the-js-is-weird-quiz.html

A Gentle Introduction To React, Visualized

React quickly became a popular JavaScript framework. Here's a very useful interactive website by ui.dev that showcases React's  capabilities and how it has helped in changing the face of the Web https://www.i-programmer.info/news/87-web-development/16282-a-gentle-introduction-to-react-visualized.html

New NodeJS Database Driver for Oracle Released

New NodeJS Database Driver for Oracle Released Version 5.4 of node-oracledb, the Node.js and TypeScript module for accessing the Oracle Database, has been released and is available from npm. The node-oracledb add-on for Node.js allows applications to be written in TypeScript, or directly in JavaScript. Version 5.4 connects Node.js 14, or later, to an Oracle Database. Last month in "New Database Drivers for Oracle and PostgreSQL Released" w looked at another recent driver release for the Oracle database, but for another language - Python. That driver had a major name change from cx_Oracle to python-oracledb to signal the change that the new driver is a thin driver and therefore makes no use of the Oracle Client libraries. As such it was aligned with the rest of the language*-oracledb naming schemes as node-oracledb does. full article on i-programmer: https://www.i-programmer.info/news/84-database/15606-new-nodejs-database-driver-for-oracle-released.html

Vaadin 23.0.0 Released - Flow and Hilla

Vaadin, the versatile full stack Java-based framework that is a competitor to Spring MVC, continues to innovate with its new release of v23 which sees the first release of Hilla, the new name for Vaadin Fusion. Vaadin consists of two frameworks, server-side Flow and in an attempt to lure developers that work say with Angular, a frontend framework introduced as Fusion in Vaadin 15, which allows to do your reactive UI logic in TypeScript while continuing writing the backend in Java. To disambiguate between the two and make the distinction clearer, Fusion is now called Hilla and has its own website. full article on i-programmer: https://www.i-programmer.info/news/80-java/15301-vaadin-2300-released-flow-and-hilla.html

Fable - Write Front-end apps for the Web in F#

How would it sound to be able to write front-end apps for the Web in  functional style and with type safety? Enter Fable, a F# to Javascript compiler with both those in mind. Fable transpiles F# to ES2015 JavaScript so code written in F# can run anywhere JavaScript runs - the browser, Node.js, Electron,React Native or generally V8. Yes of course with Typescript you can have type safety when transpiling to Javascript and since Fable does the same for F#, in terms of performance they should be equivalent. The difference is in the language itself. Although F# is a multi-paradigm language, it's big advantage is its concise syntax which renders it much easier to read and comprehend, and its default properties of immutability, rich types which let you easily represent your data or your domain and powerful pattern matching abilities for defining complex behaviors. full article on i-programmer.info: https://www.i-programmer.info/news/87-web-development/14969-fable-write-front-end-app...

Learn JavaScript and Node.js With Microsoft

Microsoft loves Open Source and loves Python. Now it seems, it loves JavaScript too? Who would have thought that someday Microsoft would promote and teach languages and frameworks not based on .NET? Ten or more years ago Microsoft's interest in dynamic languages materialized under the Dynamic Language Runtime project, a project that aimed to port such languages to the CLR to allow them to  inter-operate with the .NET languages under the same roof. I shared my thoughts about in a review of  Pro DLR in .NET 4.0 book . full article on i-programmer

js1024 - How Much Awesomeness Can You Pack In Just 1K?

js1024 is the continuation of the legendary js1k JavaScript golfing competition which ended last year and like its predecessor is planned to be an annual contest. The winners of the first one  have just been announced.  js1024 is a competition falling in the realm of the Demoscene where you create little games or audio-visual demonstrations using as few resources as possible. One notable example is js13kGames, which we  covered  back in 2017, where you have to write a full game within a 13K limit. In js1024 the requirements are even more restricted - your code's size should come up to a maximum of 1024 bytes! Really, what can you do with that amount of space? full article on i-programmer
