Two New Resources Tailored To Spring Developers

Spring Academy Pro is now freely available and Spring Builders is a new meeting point to discuss everything Spring related. Last year in " Learn With The Spring Academy " we've laid out some reasons for you to join it: Surely, there are many courses, blogs and tutorials on Spring develepment, but who knows better than the makers themselves, that is VMWare. Spring Academy, created by the stewards of the Spring framework, aims to introduce students to the ins and outs of the framework and provide the things that matter to further their careers like preparing for the official Spring Certified Professional exam. The instructors of the Academy work for VMware Tanzu Labs and that includes renowned Dev advocate Josh Long. https://www.i-programmer.info/news/80-java/17142-two-new-resources-tailored-to-spring-developers.html

Azure Workshop with Quarkus, Spring Boot and Micronaut

This free self-paced workshop shows how to develop sample microservices in Quarkus, Spring Boot and Micronaut as well as how to package them in Docker containers, deploy them and monitor their performance. As if going through the modern workflow of packaging and deploying microservices wasn't important enough, add to that coding them in modern Java runtimes/frameworks. https://www.i-programmer.info/news/80-java/16260-azure-workshop-with-quarkus-spring-boot-and-micronaut.html

Learn Spring with React and MongoDB

In this FreecodeCamp course, you will learn how to create a full stack application using MongoDB for the database, Java and Spring Boot for the back end and React for the front end. After covering  Dan Vega's 2023 Spring Boot Tutorial for Beginners  course, this is yet another Spring based one. What's the deal with Spring and why is there so much interest in it? https://www.i-programmer.info/news/80-java/16227-learn-spring-with-react-and-mongodb.html

Dan Vega's 2023 Spring Boot Tutorial for Beginners

A free crash course on Spring and Spring Boot for total beginners by none other than Dan Vega, the renowned Spring developer advocate for VMware. It's free and up for grabs on Youtube. The course, at the simplest of levels, answers two fundamental questions which tend to confuse those not familiar with Spring's ecosystem: full article on i-programmer: https://www.i-programmer.info/news/80-java/16169-dan-vegas-2023-spring-boot-tutorial-for-beginners-.html

Jakarta vs Spring - The War Goes On

In a very interesting webinar streamed live as part of the recent JConference, Antoine Sabot-Durand talked about "hostility" between J2EE/Jakarta and Spring and the differences between them from decades ago to the recent times. Antoine is a Java Champion. He is also the CDI 2. 0 spec lead, involved in Microprofile and various projects linked to CDI ecosystem development and thus Jakarta EE. full article : https://www.i-programmer.info/news/80-java/16150-jakarta-vs-spring-and-the-war-goes-on.html

Spring Data JDBC For SQLite

spring-data-sqlite is a library that brings support to Spring Data JDBC for SQLite so that you can use Jdbctemplate to access your SQLite based datasets or use SQLite as a potential drop-in replacement for H2. Spring doesn’t provide a straightforward way to integrate a SQLite database compared to other databases such as MySQL, Postgres or MongoDB. You have to jump some hoops like making and registering your own SQLDialect component. full article on i-programmer: https://www.i-programmer.info/news/80-java/16066-spring-data-jdbc-for-sqlite.html

A New Era For Spring

The new versions of both Spring Framework and Spring Boot come with new baseline requirements. They also have great new features. Let's look into them. First of all, what are these new baseline requirements? A jump to Java version 17 breaks all ties with the past. This means that since the majority of legacy Java apps are mostly in Java 8 and the newer ones being written at minimum in version 11+, there's going to be some migration pain if you want to consume all the new bells and whistles. While upgrading a Java 8 app to take advantage of the new Spring version might not be realistic, rewriting it or starting a new project from scratch by adopting the new framework is a sensible proposition. https://www.i-programmer.info/news/80-java/15950-a-new-era-for-spring.html

Microsoft Goes All Out On Java

Microsoft has released an update to VSCode that has support for Spring based applications. At the same time there's a new Microsoft website, a dedicated to Java. It's not just .NET any more, but the JVM too. Back in 2021,  in "Microsoft Jumps on the OpenJDK Bandwagon" we witnessed the beginnings of Microsoft's love affair with Java, when Microsoft released its own build of Java's OpenJDK. Why would Microsoft do that that when there are so many choices already? One reason is to establish a foothold on Java's market share. The other is that internally it uses Java a lot in its own infrastructure, especially its Azure ecosystem (Azure Spring Cloud, Azure App Service, Azure Functions, Azure Kubernetes), and for that it needs to have its own uniform and universal build applied to them. Of course, there's also the promotional incentive of pushing Azure to Java's developers, with Microsoft trying to lure them in,  even helping them to migrate their applica...

Apache OpenJPA-Life Beyond Hibernate?

Apache OpenJPA is the Java persistence project of the Apache Software Foundation. After quite some time flying under the radar, there's a new release. Let's look into it. JPA, aka the Java Persistence API, manages persistence and object relational mapping in Java EE and Java SE environments. Libraries like OpenJPA, Hibernate or EclipseLink are those providing the implementations of the standard. By writing code that adheres to the API you are not constrained by the specific library's features, despite the fact that sometimes the additional non-standard functionalities they provide can be desirable. Therefore you are free at any time to swap those libraries behind the scenes for improved performance, reduction in bug count or edge cases. full article on i-programmer: https://www.i-programmer.info/news/80-java/15450-apache-openjpa-life-beyond-hibernate.html

Integrate Azure and Spring with Spring Cloud Azure

Spring Cloud Azure is an open-source project that provides seamless Spring integration with Azure services. It has now reached version 4.0. Not to be confused with Azure Spring Cloud. which is a fully managed Spring Cloud service on Azure,Spring Cloud Azure is just an SDK that offers a convenient way to interact with Azure-provided services using well-known Spring idioms and APIs for Spring developers. Spring Cloud Azure is a slightly vague term, but in essence it collectively brings together under one umbrella the following components: full article on i-programmer: https://www.i-programmer.info/news/141-cloud-computing/15414-integrate-azure-and-spring-with-spring-cloud-azure.html

Ngrok Spring Boot Starter - Tunneling The Easy Way

Ngrok Spring Boot Starter makes establishing a tunnel towards your developer machine as easy as adding a dependency to your Spring Boot project. Ngrok is a tool for creating a secure tunnel from the public web to a machine behind a NAT or a firewall. It is considered the gold standard. Specifically it is used for exposing your local developer machine to the public net in order to test your projects or benchmark them. This is especially useful for quick prototypes, proof of concept or demonstration purposes. Also a type of tools, for instance Pingdom Website Testing, need to access your web project only over a public Internet addresses. So one such a way is to open a channel between your localhost and a public Internet address so that it can be accessed by all those services. But since you are developer who is reading this, there's a very good chance that you own a VPS on Digital Ocean or Linode or elsewhere and can set up a reverse proxy on your local machine without needing ngrok ...

Vaadin 23.0.0 Released - Flow and Hilla

Vaadin, the versatile full stack Java-based framework that is a competitor to Spring MVC, continues to innovate with its new release of v23 which sees the first release of Hilla, the new name for Vaadin Fusion. Vaadin consists of two frameworks, server-side Flow and in an attempt to lure developers that work say with Angular, a frontend framework introduced as Fusion in Vaadin 15, which allows to do your reactive UI logic in TypeScript while continuing writing the backend in Java. To disambiguate between the two and make the distinction clearer, Fusion is now called Hilla and has its own website. full article on i-programmer: https://www.i-programmer.info/news/80-java/15301-vaadin-2300-released-flow-and-hilla.html

Quarkus 2.7.1 Released - Why Quarkus?

Quarkus, the Java framework for microservices initially released by RedHat in March 2019, has reached version 2.7.1. But before looking at what's new, let's take a look at what Quarkus does differently and how it contributes to the current popularity of Java. Describing Quakus as a "Java framework for microservices" isn't 100% accurate. Despite the fact that Quarkus was created with microservices in mind, you can also build monoliths with it. Also, while Java is the primary language, you can write Quarkus programs in Kotlin and Scala as well. Quarkus, together with Micronaut and Helidon, is part of a new league of open-source frameworks that have sprung up in the last few years in order to boost the usage of Java in the microservices world. Java supremacy in this arena was under threat due to the bloat that existing frameworks were burdened with - hundreds of class files required, resolving dependencies at runtime, use of reflection, large memory footprint, extend...
